You have an inherent ability to affect your own health through your lifestyle. The National Women's Health Information Center of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides the following ten tips for a healthy life:
  • Be Happy. Take time for yourself. Stay in touch with family, friends and community.
  • Get Moving. Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day.
  • Eat Smart. Eat a well-balanced low fat diet.
  • Don't Smoke.
  • Get Checked. Do self-exams and see your health provider regularly.
  • Play it Safe. Avoid injuries. Protect yourself by buckling up, wearing a helmet, using sunscreen and UV-protecting sunglasses, etc.
  • Take medicine wisely. Read the labels and follow instructions. Tell your health provider and pharmacist about any other medications or supplements you take.
  • Avoid alcohol and illegal drugs.
  • Be Good to your Bones. Eat a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D.
  • Be informed.
For cancer prevention, The American Cancer Society recommends a diet that is low in meat and is comprised of five or more servings of vegetables and fruits and several servings of grain products such as bread, rice, pasta or beans per day. The American Heart Association suggests that even 30 minutes of low to moderate physical activity such as yardwork, moderate housework, dancing or walking is beneficial. For a fit heart and lungs they recommend aerobic activities such as brisk walking, bicycling, jumping rope and running for at least 30 minutes most days. The recommended guidelines for frequency of various health screenings varies with age and medical history, but screenings are considered to be an important part of living healthy.
